Magdalena “Nonette” Ricasa Bustamante, born in Manila, Philippines on August 21, 1949, passed away at the age of 75 years old on January 10, 2025 in Accokeek, Maryland. She is preceded in death by her father, Marcelino Solis Ricasa, her mother, Eduarda Nellie Ymzon Ricasa, her sister, Josefina “Joy” Ricasa, her brother, Severo “Roy” Ricasa (Leticia), and her youngest son, Alan Francis Ricasa Bustamante. 

She is survived by her husband, Alison “Bing” Bustamante, her children: Frances “Peachy” Bustamante Raynes (Jason) and Rico Ricasa Bustamante, her siblings: Myrna Geronimo (Mel†), Marcelino “Ricky Bhoy” Ricasa (Leni), Mary Ann King (Charlie), and Jesus Edmar Ricasa (Rosalie), her grandchildren: Kylie-Michelle Raynes Fallon (Parker), Chana Monique Bustamante, Jenaya Marie Dela Cruz Bustamante, Alyssa Renee Austria Bustamante, Melina-Rose Bustamante Raynes, and Caleb-Michael Bustamante Raynes, and her great-grandson, Owen-Thomas Raynes Fallon. 

She graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology from University of Santo Tomas in 1970. In September 1971, she married the love of her life, Alison Bustamante. Together, they had three beautiful children, Peachy (1972), Richie Boy (1975), and Alan (1982). She worked as a Medical Technologist at San Lazaro Hospital right after college and later, as a manager in the Motor Vehicle Division for the Country Bankers Insurance Company.

In the fall of 1982, she and her family immigrated to the United States to pursue the American Dream, where they bought their first home in Accokeek, Maryland. She briefly worked at the United States Post Office until she acquired her dream job as Medical Lab Technician at Southern Maryland Hospital (now known as Medstar Southern Maryland Hospital). She retired after devotedly working there for over 30 years.

Nonette exuded hospitality and generosity. She found space, value, and food for anyone who entered her home. She was the very definition of fierce and loyal, she was steadfast in her opinions, and she loved passionately and unconditionally.  She loved listening to music, frequenting casinos, and eating at various restaurants with her devoted husband and family. She was an avid collector of all things beautiful and curator of antiques. However, her deepest joy was always loving and serving her family.

Nonette will be terribly missed, not only by her immediate family but also by her large extended family and friends. 

Relatives and friends are invited to Nonette's Life Celebration on Monday, January 27, 2025 from 10 a.m. until the start of the funeral at 12 noon at the KALAS FUNERAL HOME & CREMATORY, 6160 Oxon Hill Rd., Oxon Hill, MD 20745. Edward Scott Gore, 81, passed away on Friday, January 10, 2025. He was a long-time resident of Hillsmere Shores in Annapolis, MD. He was born on Thursday, October 21, 1943, to his late parents, Lorine Babst and Edgar Scott Gore. He was married to the late Carol Elaine Gore for 57 years. He is survived by his daughters Marsha LaFollette (Tim) of North Carolina and Melissa Bailey (Wayne) of MD; grandchildren Daniel Rollins (Madina) and their daughter Jasmine; Amy Burnette (Deandre) and their sons Jordan and Riley; he is also survived by his siblings Loretta Lowe, Susan Tayman, Steven Gore, John Gore, and Linda Sullivan and his late sister Frances Wingate.

Dad loved his family fiercely and was a loyal friend. He was a plumber by trade and worked for McNew Bros, South East County Plumbing and Heating, and the State of MD (DGS). He also worked for Mason’s Towing and Eastport Volunteer Fire Co. He enjoyed working on cars, making Sunday breakfast, and collecting HESS trucks; he loved the water and crabbing.

Family and friends are invited to pay their respects on Thursday, January 16, from 4-7 pm at the Kalas Funeral Home & Crematory, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater, MD 21037, where a funeral service will be held on Friday, January 17 at 10 am. Thomas Leo Doran, 68, a 37-year resident of Davidsonville and previously of Hyattsville, MD, passed away on January 8, 2025. Born February 28, 1956 in Washington, DC to the late Tom and Marietta Doran, Thomas graduated from Archbishop Carrol High School in 1974 before proudly attending the University of Maryland, College Park. He graduated magna cum laude with a degree in Economics in 1978, before obtaining his Juris Doctorate from the University of Maryland in 1981. For over 40 years, Thomas practiced law as a member of the Maryland and District of Columbia State Bars with a focus on professional liability and medical malpractice defense. 

In 1993, in partnership with his closest friends, Thomas founded the law firm of Decaro, Doran, Siciliano, Gallagher & DeBlasis, LLP. He proudly served as the firm’s managing partner from its inception until his passing. Thomas was an active member of the Themis Advocates Group, a national organization of preeminent civil defense litigation firms, and spoke before national organizations on insurance defense issues.

A lifelong admirer of sports and athletic achievement, Thomas was a devoted fan of the Washington Nationals, Washington Commanders and, above all, the Maryland Terrapins. For 40 years, he routinely took his children and grandchildren to football and basketball games in College Park. Throughout his life, Thomas also took great joy coaching sports, a passion he continued through this past spring when he coached not one but two of his granddaughters’ softball teams. 

Aside from sports, Thomas was a lover of family tradition. Every year, he took his entire family to the Maryland and Delaware beaches, where nothing made him happier than a newspaper, a coffee and a good beach chair facing the ocean. Thomas collected beautiful Lionel trains, loved every variety of Christmas music and was famous for his annual roast turkey & Thanksgiving stuffing. He devoutly practiced his Catholic faith, attending Mass each Sunday.

Thomas is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Rosemary Doran; two sons, Thomas A. (Maureen) Doran of Millersville, MD and Kevin M. (Laura) Doran of Crownsville, MD; two daughters, Kathryn L. Doran of Millersville, MD and Laura E. Doran of Potomac, MD; one brother, Frank J. (Jule) Doran of Sarasota, FL; two sisters, Mary Doran (Mark) Brown of Annapolis, MD and Jean Doran (Steve) Levine of Ellicott City, MD. In total, Thomas is also survived by his nine beloved grandchildren, Isabel, Luciana, Leo, Edward, Rosemary, John, Giulia, Penny, and Elizabeth.

Friends are invited to celebrate Thomas’ life with his family from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, January 14 at Kalas Funeral Home & Crematory, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, January 15 at Holy Family Catholic Church, 826 W Central Ave, Davidsonville. A reception will immediately follow the Mass. A private interment will be held at a later date.

On Wednesday, January 8, 2025, Patricia Lynn Mensch, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend to many, passed away at the age of 90, exactly one month shy of her 91st birthday, in Ashburn, VA. Pat was born on February 8, 1934, in St. Paul, MN, to the late Melvin Sidney Bowen and Inez Waters. Pat had a tragic childhood; her mother died immediately after Pat's birth, and her father was not able to adequately take care of his two children, so Pat was moved around to many children's facilities and families, but she was eventually able to funnel all of that missed love to her family and friends which made her an even more extraordinary person to everyone that met her.

Pat attended Humboldt High School in St. Paul and received her Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in 1954 from the Charles T. Miller School of Nursing. She was an operating room nurse in her early years, moving from Minnesota to New York and then to California, and finally settling down for 13 years in St. Petersburg, FL. She moved to Reston, VA, in 1972 and then had a long tenure as an executive secretary with Planning Research Corporation (PRC) and Northop Grumman until she finally retired at the age of 79 to enjoy her years living at Lansdowne Woods (Leisure World) in Lansdowne, VA, where she developed great friendships and comfort. Family was the most important thing in Pat's life, and her childhood pushed her even harder to love family, God, and friends. Pat enjoyed the serenity of the beach and the sounds of the ocean. She enjoyed Bible Study, delicious homemade meals, good football games, and reading. Most of all, she cherished being with her family and friends. Pat will be remembered for her unequivocal kindness and love. She was an angel on Earth, and now she is our angel looking down on us from above.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Marshall Bowen.

Pat leaves in loving memory her children, Cynthia L. Funk (Alan), Joseph P. Mensch (Ruth), and Laura J. Thomas (Hunter); her grandchildren Amanda, McKenzie, Joey, Megan, and Ryan, along with her great-grandchildren, William and Paige.

Jill Gallagher, 94, died on Tuesday, January 7 at her home in Gambrills, MD. Born on March 6, 1930 in Australia to the late Stanislaus Valmond Vaughan and Ida Elizabeth Warren Gallagher, Jill was an avid supporter of wildlife and environmental causes. She loved dogs and cared for many abandoned animals during her lifetime. Jill was also a very talented needlepoint and knitting artist. She is survived by her sister, Pamela Guha. Friends are invited to Jill’s memorial service which will be held at the Kalas Funeral Home & Crematory, 2973 Solomons Island Rd., Edgewater, MD on Monday, January 13 at 11 am.

Ervin L Bryant, Sr., 78, of Crownsville, MD, died peacefully on January 7, 2025. 

Ervin was born January 28, 1946, in Washington, D.C. He is predeceased by two brothers, William Bryant and Rick Bryant. He is survived by two sisters, Eunice Richards and Shirley Hill, his son, Ervin Bryant, Jr. (Donna) of Annapolis, Taylor Bryant (Amy) of Venice, FL., Kim Bryant of Crownsville, MD., four grandchildren, Kristina Everett, Megan Coladonato, Jackson Bryant, and Max Bryant, and three great-grandchildren.  

Ervin worked in the flooring business for over 40 years. His hobbies were his love of classic country music, woodworking, his faithful dog and companion "Buddy," and spending time with his grandchildren, who he loved dearly. He will be remembered as a loving father and grandfather and will be greatly missed. 

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Kendal Mark Temple, 79, who departed this earth on January 7, 2025 in Edgewater, Maryland. Ken was born on July 7th, 1945 in Washington, DC.  He was the beloved child of James and Edith Temple. He enjoyed a banana cake on his birthday every year.
 
Growing up, Ken attended Prince George’s County schools, graduating from Northwestern H.S in 1963. Ken was a featured drum major with the Northwestern H.S band.  He participated twice in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. After graduating, Ken went on to be the manager for S. Klein Shoe Company in Greenbelt, MD.

Ken was hard working and had a lifelong passion for building and fixing things. He turned his attention to home remodeling and eventually began his own business as a builder/developer. Ken built many homes in Prince George’s and Anne Arundel counties, including the Truman Manor Townhouse development. Ken was also National Sales Manager representative for Velocity Power Boats.

Ken married Barbara Alice Thomas in 1963 and they welcomed two children, Lori Marie and Kendall Mark Jr. They made their home in College Park and Beltsville, MD. In 1988, Ken went on to marry Bonnie Bartel and became a stepfather to Julia Bartel.

Ken was enthusiastic about his faith in Jesus Christ. He served in various ministries throughout his life in many different congregations. He touched many lives as part of the Car Care Ministry that provided oil changes to struggling single mothers. Ken was an active member of Chesapeake Christian Fellowship where he served in the broadcast ministry (www.4thelord.org) as a camera operator on the tech team. He faithfully served on the Winter Relief ministry to the homeless and with the Men’s Ministry by assisting with repair projects.

Ken is survived by his children, Lori Austin and Kendall (Kathy) Temple Jr.; his stepdaughter, Julia Bartel; his eight grandchildren, Joshua (Jillian) Temple, Tirza Austin, Jaime (Nicholas) Ownby, Lydia (Sam) Venuti, Matthew Temple, Abigail (Dan) Rose, Sarah Temple, and Berith Austin; and two step-grandchildren, Zach and Ray Adams. “Super Grandpa” also had nine great-grandchildren, Avery Temple, Pearl Austin, Audrey Temple, Sophia Temple, Eli Temple, Carter Ownby, Jackson Venuti, Carson Ownby, and Bruce Seals, III. He also leaves behind his sister, Tina (Ron) Yingling; his niece, Cara Risher; his great-nephew, Christopher Risher; and his great-niece, Marilyn Risher.

Ken was preceded in death by his father, James Temple; his mother, Edith Temple; his brother, James Temple Jr.; and his nephew, Christopher Badaczewski.

Ken will be remembered most for his compassion and willingness to help anyone he saw with a need. Family and friends think of Ken at every crab feast and family gathering. He often said, “The worst crab is still better than the best steak.” He will always be with us during every DIY project and crab picked.

Lena Marie Schiattareggia, 92, passed peacefully in her sleep on Monday, January 6 at Asbury Solomons, where she has lived for the last 22 years. She was born on September 29, 1932 in Washington, DC to the late Emidio and Antonieta Auriti, who were immigrants from Italy. Throughout her life, Lena was active in her church sodalities and her children’s school mother’s guilds. She enjoyed hospitality events with her friends and family and was a recognized cook. Her specialty was her homemade meatballs and cannolis.  She also loved the beach and spent many summers at Sea Colony in Bethany Beach, DE. In addition to her parents, Lena was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Joseph Schiattareggia and her sisters, Amelia and Antoinette. She is survived by her two children, Sam Schiattareggia (Karen) of Selbyville, DE and Lynn Causey (Mike) of Huntingtown, MD; her four grandchildren, Joseph and Nicholas Schiattareggia and Patricia and Stephen Causey and two great-grandchildren, Abel Schiattareggia and Nico Causey. Friends are invited to celebrate Lena’s life at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church, 50 Alexander Lane, Solomons, MD on Tuesday, January 21 from 11 am to 12 noon with Mass of Christian Burial beginning at 12 noon. Interment will be at Resurrection Cemetery in Clinton, MD at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to The Asbury Foundation, 11100 Asbury Circle, Solomons, MD 20688 (theasburyfoundation.org).
